Recorded in 1976 and 1977, these are truly period performances, if in a different sense from usual: large forces, full-bodied operatic soloists, big dramatic gestures, in short the sort of thing we are not supposed to hear, let alone enjoy, these days. A somewhat surprising inclusion in the Great Recordings series, it is nevertheless spirited, convincing and welcome – rather like finding a hot dinner instead of a cold buffet.'
