De Visee was a multi-instrumentalist and composer, a favourite of King Louis XIV of France. Though his music is in the French style it is less encrusted with ornaments than most of its kind and its appeal is direct. Montheilhet plays the Suites (‘optional’ movements included) with clarity and charm, showing that the theorbo does not always have a sombre face. Recommended. '
