Viotti, best known for his violin concertos, wrote a dozen ‘solos’ for violin and continuo in the 1780s, vehicles for his own playing. This CD, the third in a series, offers the last four. They are virtuoso violin music, with discreet accompaniments – quite a lot of excursions in the violinistic stratosphere, and a good deal of brilliant passagework, but also some eloquence in the slow movements – try the last of them for a very expressive Adagio, beautifully played, and a witty Presto finale. Ayo is masterly in technique, silvery in tone; the support, on a modern piano, is solid.'
