It is interesting to compare Heifetz's transcriptions with those of Kreisler. Whereas the latter was an accomplished composer, whose original works have an irresistible elan and deeply poetic inspiration, Heifetz kept to transcriptions—but not always of the most obvious pieces. Who, for instance, would ever conceive of Chopin's E flat Nocturne, Op. 55 No. 2 (not the famous one) as a piece for violin and piano? Although it is not stated in the enclosed notes, I presume that the piano parts were written by Heifetz himself (as were Kreisler's), since he is said to have accompanied pupils during maste classes with considerable expertise.
Udagawa has been a pupil of Heifetz's one-time rival, Nathan Milstein, and yet I do not feel that she is always attuned to the genre of these transcriptions. One inevitably has memories of Heifetz's own recordings, so it is very difficult to listen to her interpretations without drawing an unfavourable comparison. She is a capable technician, although I was surprised that the first item, the Mozart Menuet, was fractionally out of tune. If she doesn't quite possess Heifetz's rocksteady purity and incredible intensity, she does display real resources of tone and colour in various numbers. The Arensky Tempo di valse and Chopin Nocturne work especially well.
However, it is the Gershwin group that is the most impressive. The slightly sleazy mood may be missing, but in It ain't necessarily so she takes time with the phrasing and the rhythm works well. Too many of the pieces, though, sound rather the same. I felt that The flight of the bumble-bee was too slow, and the Mendelssohn Scherzo short on vivacity. But then these are not easy pieces. The violin is rather closely recorded with the piano tone being a bit on the reverberant side. Gililov is a fine artist and could have been given more profile.'
