This is a most enjoyable collection. The performances are far from routine, indeed they are extremely well played, especially the La traviata Preludes, which are strikingly refined in phrasing, yet with a strong underlying espressivo. It is a pity Luisa Miller is not included, but Nabucco is particularly successful in its balance of drama and sophistication of detail and the Aida Prelude is also beautifully shaped, with the Philharmonia violins at their most ethereal. The ballet music, too, has a nice light rhythmic touch.
La forza destino opens the programme and sets the mood of the performances, not as overtly histrionic nor as sharply theatrical as some versions (Sinopoli's Gramophone Award-winning recording on DG for instance) but with the famous principal melodies shaped with a natural feeling for the soaring Verdian line. All the music-making sounds spontaneous, allegros swing along exhilaratingly, and the sense of a concert performance is helped by the excellent, realistic balance in London's Henry Wood Hall. The brass is naturally resonant and fulsome, and the string timbres transparent, yet with plenty of body and no edginess.'
