Author:
Since I reviewed the LP of Haitink's performance of A London Symphony, I have made his recording my first choice in BBC Radio 3's ''Building a Library''. In some respects, where interpretation is concerned, I would still plump for Barbirolli's 1957 performance, but the sound quality is dated and the playing not as good as the LPO's of today (quite apart from the appalling packaging of the PRT disc). Boult's EMI is a memorable performance, too, but I feel justified in awarding the palm to Haitink because he brings a cosmopolitan approach to the work which relates it to the music of its date of composition—Stravinsky, Mahler, Debussy and Elgar. The CD issue captures the full dynamic range of EMI's excellent recording and I think the Tallis Fantasia sounds better than on the LP; the strings are richer and fuller.'
