Early this century Percy Dearmer and Vaughan Williams entered into a literary and musical partnership, with a view to the creation of a new hymnal. The English Hymnal, designed to raise the standard of English hymnody in the Church of England, first appeared in 1906. Songs of Praise, ''national in character'' and intended for more general use, followed in 1926. Both volumes represented a reaction against the Victorianism of Hymns Ancient and Modern. In addition to his editorial work on the books, RVW himself composed a number of original tunes, most of which are contained in this anthology. His main contribution was to inject fresh musical ideas, some of them inspired by English folk-song: the natural minor mode, other modes, modal harmony, some unusual phrase structures.
This selection includes some memorable titles and tunes: For all the saints, for example, and Come down, O Love Divine (sung with its customary rhythmic variation of the third and sixth phrases). It also includes one small jewel: the tiny anthem O taste and see, sensitively sung by a boyish soprano voice with chorus. The John Davies Singers have produced a recording which could well be used as a model for inexperienced parish choirs wishing to make progress. (I don't know why they considered it necessary, though, to make such inordinately long pauses between the verses: this is something the parish choirs would do well not to imitate!) In general the performances follow perfectly standard, solid hymn-singing principles and are pleasant on the ear.'
