Author: Alan Blyth
The tenors tend to dominate here—and no wonder when there were so many fine exponents performing the genre. They are, of course, headed by the great and inimitable (though he was imitated, as you can hear here) Richard Tauber, who is heard in what became almost his signature tune—''Dein ist mein ganzes Herz'', happily in its original version, rather than the inferior English one made later. Then he's Partnered by the charming Gitta Alpar in a delightful duet from a Lehar work that was a relative failure Schon ist der Welt. The finales from the two Johann Strauss II operettas are classics of their kind. In that from Die Fledermaus Tauber usurps Falke's place at the start, launching the ''Bruderlein'' section, but then reverts to Eisenstein's part. Lehmann appears happily in both. Schmidt, Herbert Ernst Groh and Wittrisch, all attractive tenors in the Tauber tradition, are well represented. Patzak, with his suave, heady, mellifluous tone when young, was something else as he shows in his irresistible account of Caramello's ''Komm' in die Gondel''.
Among the sopranos, I recommend Ivogun's Czardas from De Fledermaus, but I wonder why the obviously knowledgeable BBC compilers didn't choose to represent Lotte Schone by her account of one of Adele's arias rather than by the extract from Rosalinde's part, as Adele was her Berlin role. But it is good to hear anything by this still underrated artist. The potpourri from Der Bettelstudent, another odd choice, gives us a brief glimpse of the delicious Anni Frind. I am surprised that Husch is represented by the aria from Zar und Zimmermann: Lortzing would hardly have considered himself a composer of operetta!
The transfers are good—most extraneous noises, often on retractable Parlophones and Odeons, have been eliminated with little effect on the sound. Peter Dempsey's notes are well-informed but badly laid out.'
