Never mind that few of the composers represented here will be generally familiar to organ lovers outside Sweden, I can guarantee that this disc contains as thoroughly enjoyable an hour-and-a-quarter’s organ music and as varied a range of moods, colours and styles as anyone could wish for at a single sitting. It’s all played with great enthusiasm by Anders Johnsson who is naturally anxious to display this mighty Åkerman and Lund instrument to its very best advantage; naturally anxious, since he it was who masterminded the tonal design of the 2008 instrument.

Johnsson is clearly every bit as gifted in the field of organ performance as he is in the field of organ design, for these are glorious performances, from the ebullience of the 18th century Johan Helmich Roman’s suite to the 45-year-old Staffan Storm’s …et lux in tenebris lucet, written just last year and testing both the organ’s and Johnsson’s technical resources to the limits; both come up trumps in the test, as they do in Rosenberg’s massive Fantasia. Johnsson confesses that he included the Adagio by Yngve Sköld (1899-1992) merely to explore the Malmö organ’s “American theatre organ-like tonal possibilities”, but as a performance it is a model of good taste, while at the other end of the scale Waldemar Åhlén (1894-1982) offers up a piece of simply jaw-dropping virtuoso display.

The one familiar name to organists here will be that of Bedrich Janacek who, while not Swedish by birth, warrants inclusion here since he spent the greater part of his life in Sweden and, as Johnsson writes, “No one has toured in Swedish churches like Bedrich Janacek”. A delectable chorale prelude and a breathtaking Toccata add distinction to a programme of splendid music, magnificently played and recorded on a truly tremendous organ.
