Excellent. A film which has confidence in the value of its subject and the taste of its viewers. There are no catch-penny gimmicks, no patronising diversions. The camera ranges freely, and sometimes one might like it to stay longer with one of its many objects of beauty and interest; but the filming is always pleasing, relevant and illuminating. The commentary relies much on quoted passages of verse or prose and is uniformly well-spoken. The daily routine of the choristers and choral scholars is informative, with intelligent boys and men (including, unnamed, the young Gerald Finley) telling us what they think of it. The Dean and the director of music both present themselves as men of good sense and ample learning. And the principal subject of the film, the choral music sung at Chapel services, involves a fine selection, some with organ accompaniment, some a cappella, illustrating the quality of the choir and the special experience of hearing it in that priceless setting.
