Author: John Duarte
More than enough music is now printed and readily available to satisfy most people's needs, and composer's Rights are protected by Law—though still too often violated by photocopying. It was not always so: amateur (and some professional) music-lovers compiled hand-written books of their favourite pieces, some maybe written out for them by the composers in return for favours or hospitality, or even friendship. Much music that is preserved in this way would otherwise have been lost; in no area is this more true than in that contained in lute-books.
To those who think of lute music in terms of England, France, Germany and Italy, it may come as a surprise to learn that the instrument was well established in Scotland (Mary Queen of Scots played the lute) before James VI abolished the national court, after which it continued to be cultivated by the nobility. The present recording contains 56 (obviously brief) items taken from three of the seven extant Scottish lute-books—Jane Pickering was English and how she came by these pieces is anyone's guess, simple settings of popular songs and dances whose pentatonic tunes fly their national flag at full mast. The Scottish lute-books contain a great deal of music that reflects the 'auld alliance' with France, but there is little trace of it in this recording. Ronn McFarlane plays on two eight-course lutes and a mandora (a small, high-pitched lute), adding a little variety to a programme somewhat limited in range appeal—only lutenists and/or Hibernians are likely to want to play through it at one sitting. How strange that this splendidly executed reminder that musical culture in Scotland did not begin with the Edinburgh Festival, should come from the USA—and how strange the harmonic face of the Gypsies Lilt (track 13).'
