This latest in the series of discs of music for the great feast days of the Church alights on the Abbey’s own patron, Saint Peter. A sumptuous banquet of choral delight awaits the hungry listener, laid out in three carefully balanced courses, to be savoured slowly, the whole programme sung (and played) with superlative skill, though accompanied by that ever-present rumble of the capital’s relentless traffic.

Stanford’s mighty and timeless Service in B flat is given almost complete, minus the Benedictus. Robert Quinney’s additions to the organ part of the Te Deum are a major improvement and well worth the extra effort. What an amazing achievement this service is from a composer who was only 27 at the time. The two Psalms are short specimens, unlike Walton’s anthem, The Twelve, a collaboration with the poet WH Auden. Robert Quinney is on magnificent form here, as is the baritone Julian Empett who relishes his Belshazzar’s Feast-like pronouncements. Another highlight is the fugal finale “Twelve as the winds and the months”. It’s worth buying the disc for this piece alone.

James O’Donnell, his Westminster musicians and the Hyperion team have produced another jewel of a disc. If you can filter out the external noise you will be in for a musical treat. Highly recommended.
