Telemann wrote so much music, that were his Schmieder, Deutsch or Kirkpatrick to appear he would get a standing ovation. However, in this programme there is very little that has any other current recording and, in any case, the quality of the performances overrides any other factor. Telemann provided generously for every market, here that of music for domestic use (formal or informal), in which his gift for writing gratefully for all instruments and beguilingly blending their sonorities is on open display. Das massige Gluck (''Modest happiness''), one of a number of 'Moral Cantatas'—here recorded for the first time, extols the virtues of the 'British' way of moderation; rarely have I heard German text sung (as also in the other vocal items) with such clarity.
After Tovey, one might describe Telemann as the greatest composer who didn't write a tune everyone knows, but he wrote very many that most should be happy to know and not a few are to be heard here. Indeed the man exuded goodwill and a stream of invention peppered with surprises—try the last Vivace of Suite No. 5 for one instance amongst many. Collegium Musicum 90, a hand-picked group if ever there was one, plays with marvellous freshness of spirit, underlining every Affekt but never trying to 'milk' it for more than it is worth; they bring the joy of domestic music-making into your own home. In noting the excellence of the production and the annotation I am pleased to report that both are the work of Nicholas Anderson.'
