A useful coupling (if not a very generous one), and the performances are decent: I liked the precision of the pianist, the pleasing sobriety of the violinist, the enthusiasm of the interpretations as a whole. The recorded sound, however, is quite another matter: it is bright, and the focus is unflatteringly close, giving the strings at times a chalky pallor, at others a raw glare, and making the piano in its upper register sound rather like a marimba. Tuttis are coarse and the sort of voluptuousness that the Violin Concerto needs is in short supply. The leaner sound of the Symphony comes off better, but there the dry clatter of the piano dominates unduly. Disappointing.'
