Author: Arnold Whittall
In May 1968, well before deciding to make a cycle of seven operas after the days of the week, Stockhausen composed a series of short poetic texts and offered them as stimuli to group improvisation, with the title From the Seven Days. These closely-focused recordings were made in June 1969, and convey much of the excitement and intransigence of a time when such collective 'trips' were a challenging novelty. Of the two realizations, ''Setz die Segel zur Sonne'' (''Set Sail for the Sun'') and ''Verbindung'' (''Blending'', or ''Communication''), the first is the more interesting, with a strong, instinctive sense of purpose, and a type of sound that is distinctly non-Western, if not actually other-worldly. ''Verbindung'' is less engaging: too much noise, too little music. Maybe it's time for some new interpretations of these works, but there are a good many other Stockhausen scores I'd rather have new recordings of first.'
