The sparkling piano-playing and bubbling voices which coyly introduce Anthony Rolfe Johnson as Tonio the oarsman at the start of this recital set its tone exactly. The response here is one of pure pleasure, and the only pity is that, at 49 minutes, there is simply not enough of it.
This is very much Rolfe Johnson's recital: the women wave him in and out, and Richard Jackson surfaces briefly for a duet. Otherwise he has a free hand at what he does best: the French repertoire, with stylish performances of Gounod and Faure, and the mellifluous melancholy of Hahn's dialect songs.
The recording is also fun for its unearthing of two of Adolf Jensen's songs and of Glinka's and Taneyev's Venetian nights. I find its intimate word-in-the-ear acoustic a little overwhelming on CD, and regret the paucity of information on the performers.'
