Author: John Duarte
When I reviewed the LP of this programme I noted that the Sonata, Op. 25 then had no other current recording and the Variations, Op. 40 had only one; since then Goran Sollscher has added a third of Op. 40 and, on the same disc ( 419 247-2GH, 7/87), the last two movements of Op. 25—strangely omitting the first when ample playing time was available for its inclusion. Both are refined and musically sensitive players, not given to overstatement, Sollscher the more gently poetic but with a rather brighter recorded sound—though Eisenhardt's tone loses some of its warmth in the transition from LP to CD. The two discs are complementary rather than competitive, since each contains items that are seldom played and not otherwise available on Compact Disc.'
