A glance at my comparative trio will tell you that we’ve not been short of memorable readings of Pelléas et Mélisande lately. Alas, I fear that even after repeated hearings this newcomer fails to set my heart aglow. Joseph Swensen secures conscientious results from his tidy band, but the music-making remains earthbound, and you will listen in vain for the divine poetry and lump-in-the-throat pathos of Beecham in this repertoire, let alone the intrepid sense of discovery that illuminates Tuomas Ollilla’s refreshing interpretation with the Tapiola Sinfonietta.
Happily, tension-levels rise for the Andante festivo and The Tempest Suite No 2, the latter an eminently involving display by no means devoid of character or grace but in the last resort neither as personable nor imaginative as Segerstam’s or Sakari’s (I’ve not yet heard the latest transfer of Beecham’s classic mono survey, which is in an entirely different league again). Elsewhere, the suite from Belshazzar’s Feast comes off well, the opening ‘Oriental Procession’ projecting especially effectively in Linn’s vivid sound-frame, and Swensen fashions a slinkily seductive Valse triste; but it’s difficult to grant a whole-hearted recommendation to an issue that ultimately falls short of distinction.
