This EMI issue offers absolutely first-class sound with splendid definition and range. I wrote at length about the performances on their first appearance, and will do no more than repeat that on all counts they are impressive. There are now five versions of the Fourth Symphony in the CD catalogue (not including the Colin Davis complete set on Philips) and this must surely figure very high among them. It must be recommended alongside the Karajan (DG) and the Ashkenazy (Decca), though in the first movement Berglund has greater concentration than Ashkenazy. Berglund is to be preferred to Karajan (DG) in the Seventh and can be recommend alongside Ashkenazy (Decca). No rival CD couples the Fourth and Seventh Symphonies.'
