It seems extraordinary that the current catalogue lists no complete set of the Four Legends, Op. 22. While, understandably, the general musical public is well satisfied with various alternative versions of the most famous, and clearly the most inspired, ''The swan of Tuonela'', one would have thought Sibelians would have supported the continuation of all four works, as they conveniently fit on to a single LP. But both the Ormandy (HMV ASD3644, 4/79) and Kamu (DG 2530 656, 10/76) records from the seventies have vanished, which makes Gibson's set particularly valuable, especially in its new mid-price format. His portrayal of ''Lemminkainen and the Maidens of Saari'' is not so passionately overwhelming as Ormandy's, but his subtle and slightly reserved evocation of the famous ''Swan'' has a poetically haunting atmosphere and the third piece, ''Lemminkainen in Tuonela'' is also powerful. The playing of the Scottish orchestra is impressively refined and the lack of the last degree of expansiveness of tone is partly due to the slightly distanced balance.'
