In terms of the quality of the interpretations, this is the best Scriabin piano issue since the Ashkenazy Deccas (SXL6705, 11/75 and SXL6868, 9/78). Majoring on the Preludes, Gavrilov's well-recorded selection is less wide-ranging than the memorable set done many years ago by Horowitz (RCA mono VH005, 7/74—nla), which went up to Op. 67. He concentrates, rather, on the early groups, which are already characteristic yet do not explore such recondite climates of feeling as Scriabin's later music. Indeed, although there are fast and loud pieces here, such as Op. 11 Nos. 6 and 16—the latter a fairly sinister march—mainly Gavrilov chooses the quiet and lyrical items. There is a beautiful tenderness in his playing of, say, Op. 11 No. 12, and a subtle intimacy is brought to the brooding Op. 13 No. 3.
And always he stresses the polyphonic element in this music, which is something for which Scriabin is not often credited. A good instance is Op. 11 No. 4, a better one the Op. 42 Etude, of which an amazing performance is given. Other wonderfully fluent playing occurs in Op. 11 Nos. 8 and 11 and, of course, the finale of the Sonata. The latter is the first work in this form whose manner of expression is entirely Scriabin's own. Its opening Andante is exquisitely nuanced, with a control of delicate textures in the quietissimo section that is remarkable, and this poise is maintained in the Prestissimo volando. This is headlong but perfectly controlled, highly emotional yet never overheated.'
