It's useful to have inexpensive access to Schumann's late, touching Requiem fur Mignon, albeit in a rather thin, excessively directional recording. I was initially heartened at the idea of hearing Edith Mathis in digital sound, until the penny dropped and I recalled that this very recording—originally put out on Vox—was actually reviewed by Gramophone in September 1964! Still, the elderly vintage notwithstanding, it's a fairly good production and sits nicely beside the even rarer (and charming) organ canons, offered here in securely musical performances by Hans Christoph Becker-Foss. But I suppose that most prospective purchasers of this very modestly-priced CD (under £3·00) will be interested primarily in the Piano Concerto, which, as a performance, isn't much to write home about. The solo playing warms to a certain bland poetry in quieter sections, but elsewhere rarely rises above the routine, while orchestra and conductor are run-of-the-mill. Value for money... but at a price!'
