Myrthen have never been that well represented in the catalogue, and the performance by the two young Dutch artists is the first of the complete cycle on CD, while Sarah Walker's substantial selection is happily transferred from her LP recital of eight years ago. The Globe recording is particularly welcome because of the refreshing contrast it gives us between different types of voices, perfectly feasible here as this group of songs tells no particular story, but is rather a celebration of love, composed as a wedding present from Robert to Clara. Van der Sijde has a clear, smiling soprano reminiscent of Ameling, who was one of her teachers; Koningsberger's baritone is light, and attractive with an unobtrusive vibrato. They both are eager and fresh in their approach, keen with their words but never to the point of over-emphasis. In the several settings (in translation) of Robert Burns, they tell a story well. The soprano is especially successful with ''Die Hochlander-Witwe,'' the distraught girl who loses her Donald in the cause of ''Charlie Stuart'', but Walker finds perhaps just a little more in the music. On the other hand, she is not quite as ardent or palpitating as Koningsberger in the two Venetian songs (''Leis rudern hier'' and ''Wenn durch die Piazzetta''), and the baritone is quite Walker's peer in ''Der Nussbaum'', again eager in his responses. Neither the Dutch soprano nor Walker find quite the elevated inwardness called for by ''Die Lotosblume'', but both catch the airiness of Suleika's Song and the minor ''Mutter, Mutter!'' and ''Lass mich ihn am Busen''.
Where no comparisons are to be made the Dutch pair always find the heartfelt feeling of these pieces, also the lighter manner needed for a song such as ''Ratsel'' or the artless simplicity required by the ''Hochlanderisches Wiegenlied'' sung with gentle charm by van der Sijde, as are the three duets which form a nice epilogue to the project. Their British accompanist is a thoughtful, imaginative player quite in the Vignoles class and the recording gives the voice presence and character. That of the Walker disc isn't so satisfactory, wanting the immediacy of the Globe. That impression seemed all the more marked moving from one to the other. Once again I question the penchant of British companies to record in over-reverberant churches.
However, the sound is not enough a drawback for anyone wanting to acquire Walker's admirable disc. Besides the Myrthen extracts, it contains her moving accounts of the Mary Stuart songs, late Schumann this and, still more recommendable, a charming account of Der Sandmann, a delicious one of the irresistible Kartenlegerin and a most eloquent performance of that extraordinary song, Abends am Strand, where once more Heine's and Schumann's geniuses are perfectly fused. Vignoles's playing here, suggesting the sea, the mists, the Ganges and the lotus-flower, is masterly, as is the singing.'
