Author: Christopher Headington
Lupu takes a stern view of the A minor Sonata, with little relaxation of tension even in such lyrical moments as the second subject of the first movement and the variation-form Andante con moto, though the Scherzo's trio section has tenderness. This approach bears fruit most fully in the Rondo finale, which is masterly. The sound is distinctly hard in forte, but this reflects the playing itself rather than the engineers and is in line with the interpretation as a whole, though fortunately the artist's characteristic rubato softens the austerity a little. By contrast, the G major Sonata, called ''Fantasy or Sonata'' in its first edition, is lyrical and spacious, and this performance may be recommended without reserve. Repeats are observed in both sonatas, and the 74-minute timing is generous.'
