What more is there to be said at this juncture about the virtues of Fischer-Dieskau in his prime (as here) in Schubert? These recordings come from his virtually complete 1970s Schubert Edition with Gerald Moore and all exhibit his extraordinary command of line, dynamics and colour, and above everything his deep affinity with text as much as music. As we well know that has sometimes led to an over-emphasis on particular words or consonants so as to upset the natural flow of a song, but here there is very little evidence of this. Maybe one or two passages in Standchen, Rastlose Liebe (really a tenor's song) and Sei mir gegrusst receive unwanted bulges in tone, but such moments are few and far between. Of course, there are other ways of interpreting these pieces but while you're listening to Fischer-Dieskau his comprehensive understanding of the idiom and its exploration is irresistible. Who has probed the sorrow and loneliness of Der Wanderer so movingly, who caught the contentment of Der Einsame so charmingly, or told the story of Die Forelle so naturally? Who related the romantic tale of Erlkonig with such histrionic power, who brought such a smile to Heidenroslein, or caught the stillness of the two Wandrers Nachtlieder with such a well sustained mezza voce?
As you will have judged from the contents, DG have here picked many of the plums of the Schubert repertory—and why not? This disc would indeed prove an ideal introduction for any young listener to the world of Schubert's songs. In addition to the wonderful singing they should enjoy Moore's splendid accompanying, here at the end of his career as nimble and discerning as ever. They would hear, too, an ideal recording. Why can't producers and engineers today appreciate how, 20 years ago, their predecessors let us hear the voice and piano, and not the space around them (the contrast is particularly marked as I heard this CD after the latest release in the Hyperion Schubert Edition). I have only one complaint: surely DG could have been generous enough to issue this re-cycled material at mid price?'
