At last, the Dvorak American I've valued above all the more recent issues returns on CD, and in a very satisfying transfer too—I still find it hard to believe that the recording is 20 years old. The Italians' playing has freshness, affection, firm control and above all authority to a degree that no relative newcomer can match. I have similar feelings about their Death and the Maiden: a grand conception packed with memorable detail—their evocation of terror in the early stages of the first movement coda has never been bettered. There's one slight snag—a sustained noise like radio interference for about 12 seconds in the finale (track 4 from 7' 56''); I don't remember that on the original LP. Otherwise a strong recommendation for two classic performances, well transfered. The Borodin Notturno is a pleasant though quite unnecessary extra (the disc would be 65 minutes long without it); as every Borodin admirer knows, it's much more effective in its original context.'
