Piano duets come to life in performance rather than through your speakers; you need to experience them first-hand and feel the music under your fingers. In public performance (or recording) one of the chief problems is portraying a variety of texture, colour and character that is more easily evoked by a single pianist. Sadly, on these final two volumes of their Schubert cycle, Goldstone and Clemmow are too rigid and monochromatic, and in some of the lighter character pieces they lack rhythmic energy and pianistic flair. On both discs, the sound is unpleasantly brittle and will put off all but the most determined listeners.
