Re-mastering and the transfer to CD have much improved the sound of these striking performances. As JOC remarked in her original review, the Trout receives a serious, rather than a light-hearted, reading: the opening of the Scherzo, indeed, is almost fierce, and accents everywhere tend to be more forceful than one normally expects. Though the strings sound a trifle further from the microphone, the balance with the piano is excellent, and Gilels's sensitivity is much to be admired: there is never any suggestion of his trying to turn the work into a quasi-concerto. Only the finale leads one in places to question the degree of heftiness of the approach. Alone of the CD Trouts, this one leaves room for the Quartettsatz in addition: a strong interpretation which is also tidier in some details (e.g. the upward rushes) than in the team's more recent CD recording (DG 410 024-2GH, 6/83).'
