Still known above all for his pioneering Nielsen cycle, Ole Schmidt contributes an eclectic score for Dreyer’s silent film. As a context for the visuals, it is high on atmosphere – notably the long Interrogation sequence – sometimes lacking in incident, although the passage illustrating the judges’ decree is powerfully direct. Committed playing under the composer makes the most of some enjoyable rather than memorable music.'
