Satie seems to be the 'flavour of the month', and although the record catalogue is certainly not short of surveys of his piano music, here is another, and a useful one too. Joanna MacGregor takes a very positive view of this composer, and just occasionally I wonder whether her attack is a trifle brusque, say in the Sports et divertissements and the first of the Veritables preludes flasques (pour un chien). But overall there is plenty of tonal variety and her playing responds with alertness to detail and offers some subtlety of rubato. Inevitably and understandably, most of the well-known pieces are here: the three Gymnopedies cast their usual spell, while the four selected Gnossiennes, though tonally robust, are suitably archaic, as is the Prelude de la porte heroique du ciel with its air of Rosicrucian mysticism. There is an easy charm, too, in the cafe-concert waltz Je te veux. In these performances, MacGregor also reminds us more often than usual of the debt Poulenc owed to Satie, not least in his occasional bonhomme geniality, the gamin indifference of his strolling basses, his liking for brevity and his abrupt endings.
The recording, from St John's, Smith Square in London, seems faithful and the piano sound pleasant enough although there is a little background noise, for example at the very end of track 2. In sum, this is a worthwhile issue, though it does not supplant those by Roge (Decca), Queffelec (Virgin) and Dickinson (Conifer), among others, that have already found a deserved welcome in these pages.'
