The South Korean violinist Dong-Suk Kang has already shown his paces on record, notably in a fine Naxos performance of the Elgar Concerto (4/92), and this disc confirms previous good impressions. He has a notably warm, very seductive tone quality, and he is clearly a sensitive, thoughtful musician. His outstanding attribute is a highly engaging musical personality. He communicates very strongly, and he conveys a sense of enjoyment in making music, inviting the listener to share that pleasure with him. Although Kang's technique in general is pretty good, there are passages every so often in each performance where his intonation is a little suspect, and this is the disc's only drawback. Kang is given excellent support by an alert, responsive Polish orchestra and conductor, and the recording is very good, particularly in the fact that the soloist is given a good, realistic balance against the orchestra.
In the concerto Kang brings a particularly aristocratic sense of style and elegance to his playing, notably in the first movement. He conveys the slow movement's sweetness and charm very effectively, and in a vigorous account of the finale the more spiritual, inward aspects of the music are not neglected. Kang gives a very athletic, highly rhythmic account of the Introduction and Rondo capriccioso, and the other three shorter pieces receive satisfyingly eloquent performances, notably the Romance, which is played in a rich and expressive fashion.'
