Once again Jane Parker- Smith has produced a high-class display of her impeccable musicianship, mixing well known repertory with several overlooked and neglected pieces. She plays an eclectic three-manual instrument built in 1998 by Seifert and Son for the 12th-century Catholic Church of St Gudula in Westphalia. Its rich timbral palette copes admirably with this programme of predominantly 20th-century music.

The Impetuoso by Wiedermann (a one-time colleague of Martinu in the Czech Philharmonic) makes an exhilarating opener. This is followed by the most substantial work on the disc, Landemann’s set of 20 Variations, based on the Sarabande from Handel’s Harpsichord Suite in D minor. The theme is treated exhaustively, culminating in a thrilling Toccata. Bairstow’s evocative Evening Song is the perfect foil, hampered only by the manual’s short compass, thereby denying a high note in the scherzando section.

The fiery reeds and sparkling mixtures help to bring out the contrapuntal delights of Parry’s solid and sturdy Fantasia and Fugue, the last section of which is fairly swept along in a highly convincing interpretation.

In its softer moments Guillou’s radiant arrangement of Liszt’s rambling symphonic poem is positively diaphanous. Never have I heard such quasi-orchestral clarity and delicacy. Saint-Saëns’s skilful second Fantaisie of 1895 is equally candescent and distinctive. The Grand choeur by the Hungarian Zsolt Gárdonyi began life as a 1979 improvisation. It hangs together well, as does Pierre Cochereau’s romping tarantella-esque Scherzo symphonique, as transcribed by Jeremy Filsell from a 1974 improvisation at Notre Dame. This generously filled disc makes a refreshing listening experience. Strongly recommended.
