Author:
Roman Trekel has already established himself as a reliable artist in opera and a notable interpreter of Lieder. He confirms the latter attribute with this attractive recital of Brahms. He sensibly alternates familiar and unfamiliar songs‚ so that one moves from recognising old friends to welcoming new ones. Among Brahms’ appreciable output in this field‚ there are inevitably pieces that find him close to being on automatic pilot‚ but by and large‚ this selection represents him at his best and most likeable in this genre. There are not too many that can carry the dramatic import of ‘Von ewiger Liebe’ and ‘Auf dem Kirchhofe’‚ both of which Trekel sings with a wide variety of tonal colouring and verbal emphases‚ encompassing their emotional range easily enough with his high Heldenbariton (he is to sing Wolfram at this summer’s Bayreuth Festival). He does just as well by such deeply melancholic songs as ‘Nicht mehr zu dir gehen’ and ‘Herbstgefühl’‚ in which his plangent halfvoice is beautifully deployed.
There are moments when his slightly gritty tone becomes uncomfortable to the ear‚ but they are forgiven because of his obvious command of his repertory. Oliver Pohl matches his singer in understanding of the idiom. The recording accords them equal prominence in a clean acoustic. It is a pity only the German texts are provided. In spite of that‚ at the askingprice this can be highly recommended as a welcome introduction for newcomers to the field.
