French composer and viola player Jean Rogister (1879-1964) certainly wrote skilfully and fluently for the string quartet medium. The two quartets presented here (compositionally separated by some 14 years) are both tuneful and attractive, but ultimately the music is rather faceless and unoriginal, constantly reminding the listener of many other composers instead of making an individual statement of its own. The Gong Quartet gives committed performances and recorded sound is very fine.'
