Like JD I don't think the Concierto para una fiesta will rival the popularity of the Aranjuez, but several hearings have already endeared it to me; the first movement has at least one indelibel idea and the slow movement is undoubtedly haunting. Romero's flamenco-sourced Concierto de Malaga is a slighter but undoubtedly attractive work. The performances are first rate and the Philips recording on CD is undoubtedly in the demonstration class, tangible in its presence, most judiciously balanced with glowingly vivid detail, natural string timbres and a surely ideal ambience. Comparison with the Philips CD release of the Concierto de Aranjuez and Fantasia para un gentilhombre from the late seventies (reviewed above), shows a similar refinement and beauty of sound, yet here there is far greater realism in definition without any artificial edge. The finale of the Rodrigo has fine transient sparkle and there is a marvellous, very gentle solo passage in the slow movement of the Romero piece which gains enormously from the background silence.'
