Author: John Warrack
Hermann Scherchen was a musician of striking gifts. Champion of new music, author of a handbook on conducting, enterprising experimenter into new musical means, he was also a conductor of powerful temperament and a formidable disciplinarian. These gifts did not exclude a sense of fantasy, as is shown in the performance of Antar here recorded. The ensemble is firm, the phrasing free and passionate. It is, however, really a record for Scherchen's particular admirers. The recording is poorly and somewhat unpredictably balanced, and the actual sound is a little grey. Except for those who wish to be reminded of Scherchen's individual gifts, well displayed here, I would not really recommend it above several other available versions of the work. The booklet contains no enumeration of the bands that are in fact on the disc.'
