Margaret Price captures her audience so adroitly in the first song that she can hardly do anything amiss thereafter. In All' mein Gedanken she summons all the lightness, spontaneity and smiling good humour at her command, so that we could almost think she was Elisabeth Schumann. She is not—Schumann's record has those qualities, only rather more so—but she is her delightful self and that is quite sufficient. Throughout the recital we hear a voice of rare beauty, a scrupulous fidelity to the letter of the score, and a generously directed quest after its spirit. Like Lucia Popp in her Strauss LP recital (EMI EL270255-1, 7/85) the singer has unfailing support in Wolfgang Sawallisch's accompaniments, and there is also a thoughtful provision on the part of the compilers in that the programmes of these two records overlap in only a few songs, enough to add a little spice of interest in comparisons, and not enough to cause alarm about duplication.
Both singers include Zueignung, Popp beginning with it, Price ending. Here she has the nobility of tone to do justice to the broad, swelling phrases of the song. The comparison also enforces appreciation of her evenness of production; where Popp has a restless habit of pressing individual notes, Price binds with a firm smoothness. Her control of the long sustained lines of Freundliche Vision is entirely to her advantage, it is in songs such as Wiegenlied and Morgen where a more inner kind of tenderness is wanted. In Morgen the singer's first words should seem like a continuation of the piano introduction, just as one might unconsciously speak a few words out aloud following a train of thought. This is done to perfection in a recent recording by Arleen Auger and Irwin Gage (CBS M42447, 9/87; CD MK42447); by comparison Price and Sawallisch are too explicit and deliberate. In the Wiegenlied it is the caressing touch of an old-fashioned portamento that is missing; perhaps Gerhardt with Nikisch in 1911 had an excess of it, but I prefer her too-much to Price's rather formal too-little.
Still, it is an eminently enjoyable recital. The range of mood and colour, from the unworldly tones of Befreit to the light-heartedness of Ich schwebe and the impulsive enthusiasm of Cacilie, is impressive evidence of the singer's artistic growth; and happily it comes at a time when her voice is still one of the world's loveliest.'
