Trust Sir Neville Marriner to devise a winning combination of Respighi pieces that no one has thought of before. This is the ASMF at their sweetest and most assured, defying fashion in their sensuously romantic, beautifully refined accounts of the Third Suite of Ancient airs and dances, and of The birds, but then switching from Respighi's arrangements of early and baroque music to those of Rossini in eight of the most cherishable items out of the ballet, La boutique fantasque—all that most listeners will want, in fact. They are confusingly presented here as being arranged by Sir Malcolm Sargent, but so far as I can tell, it is simply a question of his selecting from the Rossini/Respighi ballet, and topping and tailing where necessary. Sir Neville is at his most persuasive in all these items, relishing the overtly emotional appeal of the slow baroque numbers but contrasting that against the rhythmic crispness of the brisker items. Where devotees of the long-defunct BBC television antiques programme ''Going for a Song'', must sometimes have felt cheated by too slow or stodgy a rendering of the opening ''Preludio'' of The birds, Sir Neville takes a refreshingly crisp and well-sprung view. The Rossini items too are often stylishly witty, and superbly played. With brilliant, full and refined sound it is an unpretentious record to delight everyone.'
