Author:
The four symphonic impressions which make up the Vetrate di chiesa (''Church Windows'') and the three movements of the Impressioni brasiliane (''Brazilian Impressions'') give varied scope to Respighi's gift for atmospheric and colourful orchestral scoring. The brilliance of the CD presentation and the Philharmonia precision bring the scores excitingly to life. Depth of perspective is remarkable and the dynamic range exceptional, as for example in the ''clash of weapons—a battle in the skies'' at the start of the second Church Windows piece and its ending on a colossal tam-tam crash.
Unfamiliar Respighi this may be, but for anyone fond of the ''Roman Trilogy'' this unique coupling of two orchestral showpieces, stunningly played and recorded, will indeed make a welcome addition to the CD collection.'
