As always, ‘Rarities of Piano Music at Schloss vor Husum’ tickles the fancy, allowing pianists off the leash to delight in music’s byways and sidetracks. A jackdaw’s nest of paste and diamonds, this selection from the 2014 festival is as enterprising as ever, with pride of place going to the Cuban pianist Jorge Luis Prats, who offers what is aptly described as a ‘Caribbean party’. This includes Felix Guerrero’s alternately edgy and insinuating Suite havanaise, Villa-Lobos’s Broken Little Music-Box with its uncertain progression and sudden blossoming into folksong, and two encores by Lecuona. The first, the composer’s transcription of his song ‘Always in my heart’, allows Prats to camp it up to the audible delight of his audience, who respond with ripples of laughter and applause.

Then, at a very different end of the spectrum, there is Beethoven’s Fantasia, its explosive whimsy captured with formidable command by Joseph Moog. Mark Viner’s no less dazzling way with Medtner’s Primavera is yet another highlight, a truly joyous evocation of spring, while Pierre Zimmerman (the teacher of Alkan) and Elie Miriam Delaborde (Alkan’s illegitimate son) allow Vincenzo Maltempo to revel in ultra virtuoso – and in the former – Czerny esque writing.

There is much, much more, including Nostalgia-Waltz by Wim Statius Muller, a composer flatteringly described as ‘Curaçao’s Chopin’; and Mumbai-born Ernest Walker’s Prelude for the left hand, which is resourceful while taking its cue from Scriabin’s celebrated Nocturne for the left hand. But everything celebrates the unexplored nooks and crannies of the piano’s vast repertoire. Well recorded, this disc is a further addition to an invaluable series.
