Olivier Baumont is a French musician in his late twenties and you would be wiser to assess his ability from his harpsichord playing than from the nonsense written about him in the booklet: ''digging in his Voltairian garden... with Rimbaud and Stendhal in his pockets and Patenier and Brueghel in his mind's eye, he leads a double life as a concert harpsichordist and as a musicologist''. Dear me, I knew there was something missing when I was pruning the fruit trees a few weeks ago. Baumont is in fact, a talented player and his recording of Rameau's harpsichord pieces (spread over three CDs) is the first complete one to have been made. Neither Trevor Pinnock (CRD) nor Scott Ross (whose widely acclaimed Rameau performances have been recently reissued on three CDs by Stil in Paris—not available in the UK) includes the pieces which Rameau transcribed from his first opera-ballet, Les Indes galantes; nor does Kenneth Gilbert in his two-CD version reissued by Archiv Produktion a short while ago. Gilbert, however, does give us a selection of pieces from Les Indes galantes on a disc from Harmonia Mundi.
Another young French player, Noelle Spieth, confines herself to the Premier Livre (1706), the Pieces de clavecin (1724), the Nouvelles suites de pieces de clavecin (c. 1729) and La Dauphine (1747). Her two-CD album issued by the French company Solstice contains spirited playing with an informed sense of style, but it is, alas, not currently available in the UK. William Christie, on the other hand, plays only the music of the 1724 and c. 1729 publications on two separately available Harmonia Mundi CDs. Olivier Baumont includes all of this music, all the dances from Les Indes galantes, the Cinq pieces (1741) and two other pieces hitherto unrecorded as far as I know. They are Les petits marteux, recently attributed to Rameau by David Fuller and the ''Menuet en rondeau'' which appears in the table of ornaments of the 1724 Pieces anthology. Thus, the claim that all these pieces, some 85 in all, are assembled for the first time in a recording is probably just. Kenneth Gilbert's edition is followed throughout.
Placing these varied performances in any order of merit is well nigh impossible since each artist adopts an interpretative manner clearly distinct from the others. Both Pinnock and Spieth approach the music in a lively, intelligent and uncomplicated way. They have supple rhythmic sense and are able better than most to convey the simple charm of Rameau's style. Ross can be breathtaking in his virtuosity but sometimes he strikes me as being over-subjective and, as I have remarked in some other of his performances, can give the impression of being a little dismissive. Gilbert, as ever, plays with great refinement and attention to detail. His eloquent, often noble statements, are profoundly satisfying yet occasionally I find myself longing for a more warm-blooded approach, especially in the overtly virtuoso pieces.
Baumont, too, can be poetic and there is no doubt at all that he possesses a fine technique; but there is a degree of self-consciousness in the playing and a few little gimmicks which though perhaps harmless enough in themselves, are nevertheless uncalled for. Why begin the famous E minor ''Tambourin'' (Pieces, 1724) with an improvised drone-like four-chord preamble? The drone does not require emphasis since Rameau's own bass line provides the effect admirably. Such things, though, are relatively minor irritants in the context of much that is impressive. ''Les Trois Mains'' (from the first of the two Nouvelles suites) comes off particularly well as do Allemandes and Courantes, by and large; but I found a lack of nobility in the A major Sarabande (from the Pieces, c. 1729) with its arresting harmonic progressions, and it speaks too deliberately. Baumont gives an accomplished performance of the A minor Gavotte with six variations (Pieces c. 1729), matching the suppleness and radiance but not the passion of Pinnock and Spieth. But he is inclined towards over-embellishment with results that are not always entirely happy.
In spite of reservations, this set has some attractive features and it can be confidently recommended. If you already possess either the Pinnock or Gilbert versions then the chief attraction of the new set may well be its completeness. If you do not, then Baumont's playing of this wonderfully inventive and satisfying repertory should afford pleasure. Recorded sound is excellent and Baumont plays no less than six different instruments, another being used by his partner Martial Morand for five pieces in Les Indes galantes which require two harpsichords. Balbastre's arrangement of Les sauvages is also included as an act of homage to one of Rameau's earliest admirers.'
