Author:
Joseph Keilberth, who died while conducting Tristan in 1968, has never perhaps had his due in this country. His Arabella with Della Casa is more indulgent than Solti's with the same soloist and in Act 2 comes nearer to the heart of the piece (DG 415 385-1GX3, 11/85). This CD of Strauss orchestral music from the operas gives a good idea of how well the Bavarian opera orchestra played for him while he was director at Munich. It is worth having for the strong and sympathetic account of the Intermezzo interludes, which justifies Strauss's adjective 'symphonic' and reinforces the essential seriousness that lies behind this brilliant domestic comedy. Good, too, to have the jolly Overture to Die schweigsame Frau. Inevitably the Rosenkavalier waltz sequence is included, but I have yet to encounter a performance to convince me that this 'works' away from the opera. There is slight tape hiss, but on the whole this is a satisfactory transfer.'
