This is not the first version of the two orchestral suites drawn from the Romeo and Juliet ballet where balletic associations are subordinated to symphonic ones. Rather like Rostropovich's DG coupling with the National Symphony Orchestra of Washington, Jansons's performances with the Oslo orchestra, beautifully refined and pointed seem rather unatmospheric, partly a question of the recording which sounds much more vivid if the volume is turned up—but also of the approach, which is arguably apt, when the composer fully rethought his ideas in concert form. Despairing of ever having the full ballet produced he did much more than select passages from the original score. Jansons's speeds are often on the slow side, as in the ''Death of Tybalt''. That measured approach doesn't always help the music to dance, though sometimes, as in his crisp account of the ''Dance of the maids with lilies'' his preferred tempos go in the other direction While the Konzerthus in Oslo is a tricky venue for recording, the sound is remarkably good—full, clear and open but with some edge on high violins which was not apparent in his earlier, more reverberant Oslo/Chandos recordings. Admirable as this whole issue is, I do miss some of the magic flavour of the full ballet.EG
