Lorin Maazel's Cleveland recording of the complete Porgy and Bess is one of his finest achievements on record, richly emotional, strongly characterized, yet meticulously controlled in his characteristic way. The vivid Decca sound of mid-seventies vintage comes up superbly on CD, for voices and orchestra are very clearly focused within a believable acoustic, and the extra clarification from the new medium and the absence of background add to the sense of presence and reality. It is a more detailed sound, notably in the orchestra, than that of the RCA recording made very soon after.
None the less, the nicely chosen selection of 16 highlights from the RCA set, now deleted, makes a valuable issue, when so far no highlights disc of the Maazel version has appeared, and in any case the performances present a very valid alternative, one more clearly grounded in theatrical experience. The closer sound too gives a better idea of the theatre, notably in a chorus like ''Oh, I can't sit down'', where the fun and high spirits come over more intensely than with Maazel, whose speed is slightly faster. The Bess of Clamma Dale is on balance richer-toned and firmer than Leona Mitchell's for Maazel, and Sportin' Life (Larry Marshall) is far more in character than this Decca counterpart, but once that is said, the finesse and expressive range of the Maazel are satisfyingly greater, while keeping very much within an authentic Gershwin idiom.
The RCA disc of highlights has the advantage of encapsulating the opera very effectively, which is more than the Philips disc does, enjoyable as that is. As Max Harrison pointed out in his original review, the selection is less well balanced, when Crown is totally omitted, and not everyone will like having the two principal singers, both with glorious voices, each taking several roles. On CD the relative recessiveness of the recording too comes out the more sharply, and any extra range from digital as opposed to analogue recording fails to compensate for the extra bite of the Decca and the RCA. That said, it is an attractive disc with some warm and sympathetic singing, lacking only the last of idiomatic flair, surprisingly confident in its Gershwin style.'
