Here is an attractive, undemanding assemblage of piano miniatures, very loosely tied together by the theme of its title. The Scriabin Preludes – modest in dimension by Chopin’s or Rachmaninov’s standards, and positively self-effacing compared to his own later essays – are sensitively played and should appeal to anyone who prefers their Scriabin not too challenging or ecstatic. Likewise the easily assimilated diatonicism of A Sketch of the Rainy Harbour by the Taiwanese Shui-Long Ma is for those who like their blend of East and West to be easy on the ear.

Bulgarian-born but London-trained Dobrinka Tabakova writes broadly in the same unchallenging vein, as her mildly minimalist Nocturne demonstrates; her seven Modétudes are a little more adventurous, dipping a toe as they do in the more rhythmically effervescent waters of Bartók’s Mikrokosmos. Finally six pieces by Leonid Desyatnikov show, perhaps inadvertently, that the true home of all such music – which used to be precisely in the home – is nowadays in the applied worlds of theatre and cinema, rather than in the concert hall.

As befits the modest charms of the music, Evelyn Chang’s playing is lively and refreshingly straightforward, and the Avie recording is no obstacle to enjoyment.
