Author:
Organ enthusiasts are nothing if not inquisitive, and the opportunity of playing at home a recording made in a private chapel is something not to be missed. This organ started life in 1823 and has been through the hands of several builders—Eliot, Hill, Bryson and Walker—ending up as a four-manual of 60 stops. Its rich and rolling qualities are well represented here—and indeed it is just the instrument for Whitlock's music. Roderick Elms faithfully interprets the composer's wishes in the matter of registration and in the cleanness of his articulation. What doesn't come across is Whitlock's sense of drive, which is always present even in the quiet pieces, and certainly needs to be an important factor in the joviality of the faster movements. A little showmaship, a little swagger, seem to me to be necessary ingredients to get the mixture right. But this reservation by no means invalidates this cassette-only recording. There is a great deal of atmosphere here which will give a lot of pleasure.'
