The masterly Songs of Farewell contain some of Parry’s most achingly personal, deeply moving invention, and Ralph Allwood’s young, exceptionally responsive Rodolfus Choir are fully equal to the often fearsome demands posed by the composer’s miraculously skilful a cappella writing. The sequence of 11 part-songs comes off with similar panache and understanding. Herald’s recording is superb, as are Jeremy Dibble’s extensive booklet-notes. An exemplary release in every respect.'
