This is the kind of recording that particularly benefits from Compact Disc format. It contains 17 separate pieces of varying style and interest. Perhaps there is some virtue in issuing such a selection that covers the full range of Gibbons's output for the church; but their juxtaposition here is in many ways extremely artificial. The four hymn settings (just one verse of each) are of relatively limited interest, and in any case their middle voices are all modern reconstructions. On the other hand, the CD includes several wonderful works that are somewhat 'crowded' when they appear as items within an entire disc. So it is difficult to convey my feeling of bliss at being able to select for separate listening two works that seem to me to stand among the most consummate masterpieces of English church music, the verse anthems This is the record of John and See, see, the Word is incarnate.
And that may also explain what I can only describe as an extraordinary oversight in my earlier review of the LP: I seem not to have noticed—in among all the other material—the superb quality of the alto soloist Michael Chance who has of course subsequently become a professional soloist in his own right. At that stage he may not have caught the full grace of Gibbons's lines—too often he swells into the syncopated notes in a way that rather impedes the rhythmic flow and the elegance of the word-setting—but the individuality and control of his voice are exceptional for a student, as is his wonderful diction and his irresistibly exciting singing of some of the more florid lines.
The CD makes it possible to hear and re-hear these things. And it also allows you to choose a single work without scratching your record in the process. As before, the sleeve information is inadequate and lacks texts. '
