John Corigliano’s choral music eschews the more progressive elements found elsewhere in his output in favour of a simpler, more home-spun mode of expression: his affectingly tender setting of Dylan Thomas’s Fern Hill seems to grow effortlessly out of the same soil that produced the likes of Appalachian Spring and Knoxville: Summer of 1915. The offerings by both Cecil Effinger (1914-90) and Mel Powell (1923-98) display a similarly deft touch and receive suitably affectionate treatment here.'
