Those who admired Nyman’s first three string quartets (Argo, 8/91), will find much to enjoy in this, his Fourth. In the July issue I reviewed Nyman’s curiously titled Strong on Oaks, Strong on the Causes of Oaks, which turns out to be an orchestration of four movements from this quartet (Nos. 1, 2, 11 and 12). While the orchestration didn’t make any great impact, the string quartet version (which predates the other by two years) is infinitely superior. The Quartet itself derives from a piece called Yamamoto perpetuo which was especially composed for Yohji Yamamoto’s autumn fashion show in Paris, and also makes use of material from Nyman’s score to Christopher Hampton’s film Carrington, and a Scottish melody that was noted down for The Piano but in the event wasn’t used. The Camilli Quartet give an invigorating and sensitive performance.
Three Quartets dates from 1994 and is so named because it is scored for a string quartet, saxophone quartet and brass quartet. It’s an interesting textural mix, allowing the opportunity to explore and develop nicely contrasting passages in Nyman’s typically kaleidoscopic, frenetic manner, and is superbly performed here by the Michael Nyman Band. Good recorded sound.'
